Nu Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, received its charter in May 1981. The fundamental purpose of the chapter was to carry out the Fraternitys aims of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind; to provide an opportunity for unified service and fellowship among the permanent assigned military brothers; and to provide a tailored program to meet the needs of the transient brothers attending courses at the Quartermaster Center of Fort Lee, Virginia.

With a watchful eye on the total scope of "Alphadom" and vision of its future, the charter members accepted the noble task of spreading the light of Alpha. Those members were Gambriel Alexander, Elgin Almond, Knowlton Bassard, Willie J. Bradley, Jr., Silas H. Christian, Ill, Tony Edwards, Verard A. Hughes, Robert Jamerson, Paige P. Johnson, Melvin T. Jones, Joseph King, Thomas F. Law, Walter Lowe, Van J. Shaw, and William L. Sutton.

Under the capable leadership of Silas H. Christian, the chapter completed a very successful first year. Among the accomplishments of that year were a contribution to the Alphas Million Dollar Drive (a national campaign of the Fraternity), tutoring services to the youth of Chesterfield (Chesterfield Mental Hygiene Clinic), participation in the Virginia Association of Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity {VACAPAF), and the Founders Day Program.

Since our founding, the chapter has been engaged in equally outstanding ventures. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity have a strong and long standing commitment to enhance the quality of life in the community. Because. of that commitment, the fraternity has often taken leadership roles in resolving community problems. Noteworthy, its annual King Holiday Memorial Breakfast has become a recognized forum that outlines our programs and recognizes others who share our vision and exemplify the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The chapter has implemented numerous programs to educate the youth of Central and Southside Virginia on avoiding teenage pregnancy, the importance of attending college, and successful career planning. The chapter also takes pride in its participation and co-sponsoring of the Virginia Department of Social Services program "Claiming Our Own through Adoption."
